Biography

Pablo Garibay


Mexican guitarist acclaimed nationally and internationally, Pablo Garibay has won first prizes in more than fifteen major competitions, including the Francisco Tárrega and Julián Arcas competitions in Spain, René Bartoli in France, Manuel M. Ponce in Mexico, JoAnn Falletta in the United States, and the International Guitar Competitions of Gevelsberg and Aachen in Germany.


Garibay is regarded as one of the most distinguished instrumentalists of his generation. He completed his studies at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and at the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt in Weimar, Germany. His outstanding artistic achievements earned him the Gabino Barreda Medal for Academic Merit from UNAM, as well as Mexico’s National Youth Award, which he received from the President of Mexico in 2002.


As a soloist, he has been invited by leading orchestras in Mexico and abroad, including OFUNAM— with which he undertook his first European tour—the National Symphony Orchestra of Mexico, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Mexico City Philharmonic, the Evgeny Svetlanov Symphony Orchestra in Moscow, the German Federal Youth Orchestra (Bundesjugendorchester), the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, the Salzburg Chamber Soloists of Austria, and the Eduardo Mata Youth Orchestra. He has collaborated with renowned conductors such as Leo Brouwer, Clément Nonciaux, Damian Iorio, Lavard Skou Larsen, Jan Latham-König, JoAnn Falletta, Natanael Espinoza, Jesse Levine, Juan Carlos Lomónaco, Iván López Reynoso, Gustavo Rivero Weber, Gordon Campbell, Donato Cabrera, Joan Pagès, Armando Pesqueira, Jesús Medina, José Areán, Samuel Pascoe, Gabriela Díaz Alatriste, and Wolfgang Bozic.


He gave the Mexican premiere of Cantata de Perugia for guitar, chorus, and orchestra by its composer Leo Brouwer. He has appeared as soloist with the Dortmunder Philharmoniker under Gabriel Feltz, and at the Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow under Damian Iorio, performing Manuel M. Ponce’s Concierto del Sur. In 2024, he returned to the same venue to perform Joaquín Rodrigo’s iconic Concierto de Aranjuez, conducted by Clément Nonciaux.


Garibay premiered Concierto del Sur in South Africa and gave the world premiere of Zimmergramm, a work commissioned from Mexican composer Enrico Chapela by Deutsche Welle, at the Beethovenfest in Bonn, Germany. He also gave the world premiere of El árbol de la vida by Hebert Vázquez with the Mexico City Philharmonic, as well as the first performances of Interregno (2019) and El tañido de aire (2025) by the same composer, alongside the NOMAD ensemble and Norio Sato at Tokyo Opera City Recital Hall. He has also premiered works by Tomás Barreiro, Mateo Barreiro, and Diógenes Rivas, among others.


In November 2025, he gave the world premiere of Eduardo Angulo’s Concerto No. 3 for Guitar and Orchestra at the Grand Hall of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, performing with the Russian Philharmonie under the baton of Stanislav Malyshev.


The sound of his guitar has been heard in some of the world’s most prestigious venues, including the Sala Nezahualcóyotl and the Main Hall of the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, the Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow, the Parco della Musica in Rome, the Beethovenhalle in Bonn, the Hannover Philharmonie, the Tokyo Opera City Recital Hall, the Merano Music Festival in Italy, and the National Theatre of Belgrade, among many others.


He recently recorded the world premiere of El árbol de la vida for NAXOS with the OJUEM conducted by Gustavo Rivero Weber, released as part of the album of the same title. In 2023, he produced and performed the album Sound Dreams with the NOMAD ensemble, recorded at Tokyo Opera City Recital Hall. In 2025, the album 2 Latitudes was released on the URTEXT label, featuring Ponce’s Concierto del Sur and Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Concerto No. 1, Op. 99, again with the OJUEM under Gustavo Rivero Weber. Additional recordings have been released by Naxos, Urtext, RTVE (Spain), and Fleur de Son Classics (USA).
